It was after nine by the time Ruby met Gabe Ruiz at a parking garage downtown, in the business district.

She felt a little guilty when he’d given her the address so readily, considering she’d prohibited him from coming along with her to the prison. He didn’t seem to be holding a grudge about it, which was a good thing.

After the day she’d had, she didn’t need any more drama. As much as her spirit was willing, her body was dragging.

They entered a modern, all-glass skyscraper that was a contrast to the architecture of the many neoclassical monumental buildings in the area, and took the elevator to the top floor.

When Ruiz pressed the button, Ruby stared at the director. “Floor fifty. CBN Enterprises. Aren’t they a financial company?”

“Something like that,” Gabe said with a shrug. “I think they’re an investment firm. If I had anything to invest, I’d probably know better.”

She yawned. “It’s late. How do you know he’s here?”

“Called security. Turns out, he’s been here since last night. He’s been sleeping here.”

“Really? That’s interesting.”

“That’s what happens when rich married people fight. They don’t need to make up. They just avoid each other.” Gabe grinned up at the climbing numbers above the door. “Believe it or not, the reason they had two houses is because they didn’t really like each other very much. They liked the way their combined salaries looked on paper, but they must’ve annoyed the hell out of each other.”

“Kids?”

“Nope. DINKs.”

“DINKs?”

“Dual income, no kids,” he explained. “So she had the mansion out in Virginia and he had the apartment here in D.C. But when the maid died, Valerie moved into his apartment in D.C. and he said he was going to start sleeping in his office, to give her space. At least, that’s what he told security.”

“Okay,” she said. It sounded a little odd, but her own private life wasn’t that much better. “Odd that he didn’t come in to give a statement.”

“Definitely. But not really unexpected. Bet he gives us the excuse that he’s too important to leave the office.” He gave her a sideways glance. “So everything was really okay with seeing Vallejo again?”

She nodded, even though at the mention of his name, she heard Vallejo calling out, Ruby, in that sickeningly sweet, singsong voice. Suppressing a shudder, she said, “Yeah. It was fine. I mean, I don’t want to make it a habit of seeing him, but it was definitely less stressful than last time.”

At least, that was what she’d told herself on the ride home, hoping to convince herself.

She added, “The only problem was, it was a waste of time and gas. He didn’t give me anything.”

“Nothing? Did you ask him about John?”

She nodded. “He didn’t really seem to care that he’d been arrested. He congratulated me. So either he’s bluffing, or John really was just a copycat.”

“Oh well,” Gabe said, and was that a hint of a smug, I told you so smile on his face? “It wasn’t totally wasted time. At least you ruled that possibility out.
